Hello, and thank you for visiting my website. This space brings together the different threads of my professional life: as a barrister, mediator, legal analyst and advocate for individuals who might otherwise struggle to access justice.
After nearly five decades in legal practice, I have come to see my work not simply in terms of cases or clients, but in the context of a wider challenge – the growing inaccessibility of justice. Whether through the courts, mediation or public discourse, I believe we need a change in approach: one that is honest, principled and humane.
My Journey (so far)
I began practising as a barrister in 1977. If I manage to reach 2027 still in practice, I will have spent 50 years in the legal profession – something I find both remarkable and, frankly, a little surreal.
From the start, I took on a broad range of cases, and most of my early work was in court. Those were different times: the work was highly interpersonal and often quite lively, with a shared sense of purpose among colleagues. I look back on those years with affection – not nostalgia – but with respect for the people I worked alongside, many of whom have now retired, died or become judges.
Over time, my practice evolved to focus on personal injury and clinical negligence, areas that combine advocacy, intellectual challenge and real human stories. I was drawn to the complexity and the responsibility. I’ve never been afraid to challenge assumptions, and that attitude has seen many of my cases proceed to appeal, often raising novel or important points of law.
I still practise as a barrister through Complete Counsel, an innovative company I helped establish in 2015. It was born out of a desire to modernise how we work as barristers, offering flexibility and support without the baggage of tradition for tradition’s sake.
Why have I created this website?
Over the past several years, I’ve become increasingly involved in mediation, legal writing and pro bono advocacy. It has struck me that these areas, although diverse in form, are united by a shared goal: improving access to justice.
Access to justice is in decline. We are, some say, in a “post-truth” era, but I would argue we are also drifting toward a post-law society, where power frequently overrides principle, and the courts are becoming inaccessible to ordinary people.
The current funding structures in litigation benefit corporate interests. High legal costs, unnecessary complexity and a lack of judicial intervention have made it nearly impossible for many individuals to pursue claims unless they are wealthy or willing to sacrifice a significant portion of their damages under a conditional fee agreement.
This platform is my response. A space to offer independent mediation, engage in legal discourse that challenges the status quo, and provide direct support to individuals who might otherwise be left behind.
The Three Pillars
Mediation: A human-centred approach
I qualified as a mediator in 2016 after completing the CEDR course in Sitges, and was subsequently invited to join the CEDR panel. Since then, I’ve mediated a broad range of disputes, from clinical negligence to commercial matters to neighbourly disagreements.
I don’t chase quick resolutions. I focus on listening, understanding, and guiding parties toward meaningful, long-term outcomes.
“Professional, patient and persistent mediation.”
Legal Discourse and Disruption
I have always been a writer and speaker as much as a lawyer. Through my site, Pro-VIDE-Law, I explore issues that often go unaddressed – legal reform, policy shifts and the need to think differently about law.
Too often, legal discussion remains stuck in the past. My goal is to provoke thought, stimulate debate and encourage innovation.
Challenging assumptions, initiating debate.
Advocacy: Fighting for Fairness
There are individuals and organisations who, despite deserving representation, are excluded from it. Through Direct Access and pro bono work, I aim to bridge that gap.
I offer strategic, high-quality representation with a strong sense of purpose, never chasing volume, always pursuing justice.
Direct Access to justice.
What makes my pursuit different?
I am not a law firm. I am not a corporate mediation provider. I am a person with decades of legal experience and a strong belief that the law must evolve.
- I provide tailored, independent mediation with the patience and insight that complex disputes require.
- I write and speak freely and fearlessly, engaging in public debate to drive legal reform.
- I act for those who need it most, not just those who can afford it.
This isn’t a brand. It’s a mission.
Looking ahead
As I approach a half-century in law, I find myself less interested in maintaining tradition and more interested in redefining what legal practice can be.
Through this platform, I hope to connect with:
- Those needing skilled, empathetic mediation
- Legal professionals and academics interested in disruptive thought leadership
- Journalists, policy-makers and activists pushing for justice reform
- Individuals in search of honest, strategic legal support
This site will serve as a hub – for booking mediation, reading my latest commentary and following my continued journey through the legal landscape.
Thank you for being here. I hope you’ll stay for the conversation.
